A Little Background on My Insomnia Research

As a young man, I was searching for something because I had a powerful taste of what I call experiential knowledge. My life’s work has been and continues to be devoted to researching, testing and perfecting reliable and valid knowledge and tools that develop stable access to such deep awareness and to the greatest possibilities of human life.
Then my task was to make such knowledge and tools available to large numbers of people so they could break free from brutal and dangerous cage of conditioning and live better and longer powerful lives of real adventure.

- For starters, you need to know that your hard-wiring for sleep is “mismatched” for the speed and complexity of the life you’re living. As is the case for you “survival hard-wiring”—known as the Fight or Flight Response.
- Your hard wiring for sleep AND your hard wiring for dealing with life threatening situations are BOTH designed for a time that’s long gone, a time that was simpler, more clear and in many ways more vital and alive.
For example, your hard-wiring for sleep is meant to be regulated by the rising and setting sun, not by artificial lighting. Even your great grandparents slept 90 minutes longer than you do and if they were tired during their day, they napped—they didn’t drink a triple espresso.
They also lived with less speed and with more SOUL. By soul I mean they lived and worked with more of a loving connection to life and a meaningful connection to other people. We live in soul-less times. Some people call it a rat race. And as the famous comedian Lily Tomlin said: “Even if you win the rat race, you’re still a rat”.
- Americans are especially sleep deprived. They sleep fewer hours and they sleep less well than do most Europeans and Asians.
- Our Founding Fathers did not imagine that we would misinterpret the “pursuit of happiness” as doing fast paced work in high stress often meaningless jobs so we can go to the mall and buy things.
- Nor they did imagine that so many American citizens would go to sleep each night worrying about money, health care and a roof over their heads.
Evolutionary Scientists Discovered What Most Doctors Should Know—But Don’t
I found that what evolutionary scientists call the great MISMATCH between our life style and our hard-wired survival response is the main the culprit that ruins sleep.
And that’s why my remedy for your insomnia is the Master Key for solving this problem.
Think of it this way: Your brain’s sleep-wake equipment functions in what’s known as a Circadian Cycle. You’re wired so that when the sun sets, chemicals release into your system to make you sleepy and when the sun rises, different chemicals get released to wake you up.
Even in your waking hours, your brain needs recharging every 90-120 minutes in what is known as BRAC, the Brain Rest Activity Cycle. That’s one great reason why some countries have siestas—where American’s have Starbucks.
A good night’s sleep is made up of a chain of sleep stages.
Your sleep machinery doesn’t move you through an abrupt change from awake to asleep, although it can seem that way to you at times.
Falling asleep involves a series of amazing brain and body activity changes.
When you fall asleep your brain waves slow down, your muscles relax and your eyes movements still. Your night’s sleep then goes through a sequence of stages.
Chemicals including hormones and select regions of your brain interact to drive your sleep cycle.
This interaction of chemicals and hormones activates parts of your brain that bring on and maintain deep relaxation and sleep and it deactivates parts of your brain that stimulate arousing and awakening.
Disturbances in any of these stages can lead to your not getting the sleep you need.
Now what I discovered is that the Mismatch between your hard-wiring for survival and the speed and complexity of life today leaves you AWASH IN STRESS HORMONES. It’s these stress hormones drive your insomnia.
This fact is the foundation of the Master Key I will give you to sleep like a baby again.
OK Here’s Your Insomnia Problem in a Nutshell
If you and I were sitting around talking about sleep 20,000 years ago and a saber-toothed suddenly came upon us. We’d immediately go into a survival response we’re hard-wired for. This hard-wired survival response is known as the “Fight or Flight Response”.
When you and I saw the saber-toothed tiger, stress hormones would pour into our system to PREPARE us to fight or run to for our lives. Now do you think we could lie down and take a nap in this situation? No way.
- These same hormones keep you aroused and alert at night and they interfere with your ability to get the sleep you need so you wake up feeling dog-tired.
- On top of that, stress hormones such as CRH trigger anxiety and depression and so you have the makings of a wicked miserable day ahead indeed.
Let me explain all this in more detail. I want you to KNOW what’s happening to you. So you can grasp the value of what I’m offering to you.
Your “Fight or Flight” Hard-Wiring Is Flooding Your Body With Stress Hormones.
This Turns Your “Stress Hormone Faucet” On Too Often and Leaves It on Too Long
Think of it this way: Your Involuntary Nervous System has 2 switches:
- One for housekeeping chores to take care of sleeping, digestion, elimination etc
- the other for emergency alert conditions to prepare you to fight or flee in the face of life threatening danger.
Think again about the saber-toothed tiger coming upon us.
When we see the tiger, our Fight or Flight machinery kicks in. Our “housekeeping” switch then turn off and our “emergency” switch turns on. Stress hormones pour into our systems and blood be gets rerouted from housekeeping chores and brought to our arms and legs so we could fight like hell or run like hell.
If we survived, within a little time, our “emergency” switch would shut down and our “housekeeping” switch would turn on again. And stress hormones would flush out of our system.
That’s key—Here’s why:
- In truth, your Flight or Flight Response was designed for short term use only (remember this).
- Stress Hormones are supposed to wash out of your blood and tissues, not linger there.
- But because of the Mismatch in your hard wiring it’s triggering in error too often. And it’s now the “saber-toothed tigers in your mind” that trigger it.
- The result is that your “Stress Hormone Faucet” gets turned on too frequently.
- And so your system gets flooded with stress hormones such as cortisol and epinephrine.
- They seep into your blood and tissues and linger there causing your sleep machinery to malfunction more than you ever imagined possible.
Studies Show Insomnia is a DANGEROUS Problem That Most People Can’t Solve. But YOU Don’t Have to Be One of Them.
Your insomnia is unfortunately more of a problem than not sleeping well and feeling fatigued.
Research reveals that insomnia sets up the conditions to make you psychologically miserable, anxious, and depressed and it can break you down physically with problems such as, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.
My first clinical discovery of this was in 1990 and it’s been confirmed by science research again and again.
- · Consider this study reported in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism Vol. 86, No. 8 3787-3794 2001).
A group of insomniacs were compared to a group with no insomnia. Blood was collected ever 30 minutes from members of both groups over a period of 24 hours. The findings: The level of stress hormones, including cortisol, was significantly higher in the insomnia group.
Moreover, the findings included evidence that people with the most severe sleep disturbances secreted the highest amount of stress hormones—especially at night.
In the words of the principal scientist, Dr. Vgontzas.
“We conclude that insomnia is associated with an overall increase of ACTH and cortisol secretion (stress hormones)…. This means that insomniacs are experiencing hormonal changes in their bodies, which prevents them from sleeping…. Insomniacs are at risk not only for mental disorders, i.e. chronic anxiety and depression, but also for significant medical morbidity associated with such activation. The therapeutic goal in insomnia should be to decrease the overall level of physiologic and emotional arousal….”

- Getting less sleep than you were “designed for” disrupts the finely balanced system that not only keeps you healthy and energized, but that also sustains your life. For example, not getting enough sleep upsets your hormonal equilibrium and creates conditions like early diabetes and rapid aging.
- Sleep deprivation also reduces your Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and low HRV is a significant risk factor for heart attacks and a powerful predictor of sudden death in humans and animals.
